Chintu ka Birthday: A day in the life of a family living in a war-torn country

Chintu ka Birthday shells out a story of a family living in the middle of the US-Iraq War. Set in Baghdad, the movie follows an emigrant family from Bihar, India who are preparing to celebrate the birthday of the six-year old Chintu. The movie shows how the family gets stranded in Baghdad, waiting to be evacuated. Despite their circumstances, they are trying to make the best of it.
Written and directed by Satyanshu Singh and Devanshu Kumar, the duo does not fail to impress with their debut movie. Chintu ka Birthday immaculately shows the innocence, curiosity, and the bewilderment one experiences in childhood. The director duo has drawn strong performances from their cast.

In April 2004, Chintu was getting ready for school and his mother, Sudha, was helping him on his special day. To celebrate his birthday in school, his dad, Madan, has ordered toffees to be distributed among his classmates. There is still much to do- a cake to buy and a house to be decorated. While the family is busy in preparations, their celebration is derailed by a car bomb going outside the house, the closing down of the bakery, power cuts etc.
As they try to salvage the party, they are visited by two American soldiers. The appearance of the two elevates the film into seriousness. With the arrival of the soldiers, a threat to their freedom looms over. However, they try to maintain their optimism.
The shifts from comedy to drama and comedy again feels a little uneven. Maybe it is because the story is told over a day. Though with its run-time being only 83 minutes, the movie manages to capture the attention of audience owing to its smart writing and meticulous screenplay.
The performances from the cast which includes Vinay Pathak, Tillotama Shome, Vedanta Raj, and Seema Phawa is expressive. The casting of the film fits perfectly as each actor gives life to their character. Even the American soldiers and Iraqi landlord brings a certain flair with their on-screen presence.

With the party gone to chaos, Chintu wonders will he be able to celebrate his birthday?
At its heart, Chintu ka Birthday is about a six-year old who wants to celebrate his birthday. Given that the story’s time line is only a day, it has both benefits and hindrances. But this movie at the end does not fail the audience and leaves with a thought in mind and a smile on the face.
