Come and join the passion and celebration of the traditional Kerala boat race in the legendary backwaters of Kerala. Behold the spectacle of strength and grit as the renowned snake boats of Kerala race forth as part of festivities and tradition. Kerala Tourism brings together yet another exciting year of the Champions Boat League 2019,that will be launched across 12 districts of Kerala, including Allapuzha, Kottayam, Kollam, Thrissur, and Ernakulum.

Every year this mega boat race event is organized by Kerala Tourism to promote and market tourism in Kerala, along with the conservation of its rich cultural heritage. This mega sports event is mainly conducted during the harvest festival Onam in autumn. This traditional boat race is known as Vallam kali and is a type of canoe racing with paddled war canoes. The snake boats or the Chundan Vallom, are about 140 ft long and are world-famous for their uniqueness and power.

This year, the Champions Boat League has kicked off on August 31st with the prestigious Nehru Trophy Boat Race in Alappuzha. There will be 12 races on weekends spread across three months. The grand finale will be with the President’s Trophy Boat Race in Kollam on November 23rd. Each race will have 20 teams with 110 players to row a snake boat in each team — the boatmen row in perfect unison to the rhythm of the Vanchipattu or the boat songs. The winners will take home a cash prize of Rs. 25 lakhs, while the First and the second Runners-up will receive Rs. 15 lakhs and Rs. 10 lakhs, respectively.
As of now, four races have been completed with the Tropical Titans ahead of the tally with four wins and 55 points. So tune in to your TV channels to cheer for your favorite teams and see the magic of the Kerala backwaters unfold right before your eyes in this mega sports event.
