TED is a non-profit dedicated to the idea of its tagline, ‘Ideas worth spreading’. The concept started out way back in 1984 as a conference that brought people together from various walks of life but in particular Technology, Entertainment and Design which makes up the acronym. TED talks over the years have become hugely popular what with the advent of popular free video-sharing website YouTube. It can be dubbed as a platform for curious souls to engage with ideas and each other, both online and at TED and TEDx events that take place around the world, all year long.
TED talks have spanned almost every facet right from science to business to global issues in more than 100 languages. The talks are rooted in the passionate idea of changing attitudes, lives and eventually the globe with its incredible and exemplary speakers that come from various walks of life. Over time TED Talks have won a devoted following around the world, and have spread to television set-top boxes such as Apple TV and streaming service Netflix as well. TED is known for its brilliant, accomplished and creative community, and speakers are coached and encouraged to give "the talk of their lives" in no more than 18 minutes.
TEDx Gateway in particular is an independently organized TED event operated under license from TED. The conference is a full day seminar that will explore the deepest scientific and psychological insights, the latest medical advances, the neatest invention, all mixed with a dose of ancient wisdom and inspiration.
Last year’s TEDxGateway conference took place in the month of December and had over 4,000 plus attendees. It had managed to convene a cross section of people who’ve helped shape India into what it is today. This is the eighth edition of TEDxGateway and last year there were an eclectic mix of speakers, right from a quantum researcher to a poet, a graffiti artist to an investigative journalist. The conference was not only helmed by adults but young children like the school kids who built android apps, a singing child prodigy, a 12-year-old Canadian girl that could sing national anthems of over 80 countries and what not. The theme was to inspire lives and all the speakers proved the point with passion and panache in turn inspiring the audiences in attendance.
If that wasn’t enough TEDxGateway also offers interactive workshops, masterclasses and brainstorms on a vast array of relevant and surprising topics led by speakers, partners and TEDx patrons. When it comes to selection, what is amazing is that the organisers start off with a list of around 800-1000 speakers and over a span of close to eight months condense it to the final line up of over 25 speakers, which is yet to be announced. The eight edition of TEDxGateway is sure to be electrifying and the organizers are definitely going to up the ante with last year’s brilliant reception from audiences.
